Coating Old Concrete in a Former Refinery Town

Epoxy flooring in Cyril usually starts with a slab that has been around a long time. The townsite was surveyed and dedicated in September 1907, and building started in early 1908. For about sixty years after that, the town grew around an oil refinery that ran from the early 1920s until it closed in 1984. Many of the garages, carports and shop buildings here date from those decades. Their concrete has seen a lot of use, and it shows it.

What we see on Cyril floors

  • Thin, dusty concrete that sheds grit every time you sweep
  • Old paint or porch enamel worn through in the traffic paths
  • Oil and grease soaked deep into a shop or carport slab
  • Hairline cracks running across a slab with no saw-cut joints
  • Patches poured over the years that do not match the original floor

None of that rules out a coating. It does mean the prep matters more than the finish. We diamond grind the whole floor to get past old paint and weak surface concrete, then fill the cracks and patch the low spots before any coating goes down.

Houses coming back into use

The 2020 census counted 451 housing units in Cyril, and 21.7% of them were vacant. That is a high share for any town. When an empty house gets bought, repaired or readied for a tenant, the garage or utility room floor is often one of the last things on the list. A coated slab is quick to clean and does not hold dust and odors the way bare concrete does. For a rental, a solid color or light flake floor in a garage or laundry space is easy to wipe down between tenants. Renters should get the owner's written permission before any coating work.

Detached shops and outbuildings

Small-town lots often have a detached garage or metal shop out back instead of an attached two-car garage. Those floors take tractor fluid, mower decks, welding spatter and dragged equipment. For a working shop we usually recommend a thicker 100% solids epoxy with a broadcast texture so the floor has grip when it is wet or oily. If the building has a big door that stays open in the afternoon, a polyaspartic topcoat holds its color better in direct sun.

How a Cyril job is scheduled

Cyril is about 28 miles northeast of Lawton on US 277, so we plan the trip around the full job. We bring grinding, repair and coating gear on the first day and set the cure plan before we leave. You get written guidance on when to walk on the floor, when to move things back and when to park or roll equipment onto it.

Picking a finish for a small-town garage

Most Cyril garages we see are used for more than parking. They hold a freezer, a workbench, yard tools and whatever came out of the house during a remodel. That kind of space does well with a full flake broadcast floor. The chips hide dust and scuffs, and the texture keeps the floor from getting slick. If you want a cleaner look, a solid color with a light chip scatter works too. For a carport or a slab that sits outside the garage door, we use a UV-stable topcoat so the color does not fade in the sun. We also look at how water drains off the slab. A floor that holds puddles near the door may need a small repair to shed water before we coat it.

Cyril Questions

Can you coat a garage floor in an older Cyril house that has old paint on it?

Yes. Old paint and enamel have to come off first, or the new coating will only be as strong as the paint under it. We diamond grind the slab to bare, sound concrete, fill cracks and patch low areas, then apply the coating system. If the concrete underneath is crumbling, we tell you before quoting a finish.

Is it worth coating the garage in a house I plan to rent out?

Many owners think so. A sealed floor sweeps and mops clean, resists oil stains and looks finished when the next tenant walks through. A solid color or light flake system is a practical choice for a rental. We give you a written quote so you can weigh it against your other repairs.

Do you coat metal shop buildings on rural lots near Cyril?

Yes, as long as the floor is concrete. Shop floors usually get a thicker epoxy build and a textured finish for grip. Heavy oil saturation adds degreasing and sometimes extra grinding, which we list in the quote.
