Why Lawton Slabs Crack
Concrete crack and floor repair is part of almost every floor job we do in Lawton, and sometimes it is the whole job. The clay soils across Comanche County expand when wet and shrink when dry. A September 2025 geotechnical report for the Comanche Nation Powwow Grounds in Cache found plastic soils with a plasticity index up to 48 and said they should be expected to undergo significant volume change with moisture. The report estimated 2.8 inches of potential vertical rise. Slabs on that kind of ground move, and they crack.
Types of damage we repair
- Shrinkage and settlement cracks: hairline to wide cracks that run from corners, drains and posts.
- Moving cracks: cracks that open in dry months and close after rain.
- Spalls and chips: broken edges at joints and pitted spots from impact or wear.
- Raised or sunken joints: control joints where one side has lifted or dropped.
- Worn surfaces: dusty, rough concrete where the top layer has worn away.
Reading the crack
Not every crack means the same thing. A thin crack that has not changed in years is usually cosmetic. A crack that keeps growing, has one side higher than the other, or lines up with a crack in the wall above may point to a structural or foundation problem. We look at width, offset and pattern, and we ask how long it has been there. If we think a crack is structural, we tell you to have it checked before we do any floor work. This Old House lists foundation repair at about $2,150 to $7,730 or more when large cracks point to structural problems.
How we repair cracks
Static cracks are cleaned out, then filled with a rigid repair material and ground flush with the floor. Cracks that are still moving are different. Filling them with a rigid material just moves the crack an inch over. For those, we use a flexible filler, or we treat the crack like a control joint so the floor has a place to move. In a coated floor, we carry that joint through the coating so the coating does not split on its own.
Resurfacing worn concrete
When a slab is sound but the surface is rough, pitted or dusty, a thin cement-based resurfacer can give it a new top layer. HomeGuide lists concrete resurfacing at about $3 to $7 per square foot. Resurfacing can be the final finish or the base for a coating.
Sunken sections
If part of a slab has dropped, filling the crack will not fix it. The section may need to be lifted by mudjacking or foam injection. HomeGuide lists mudjacking for a 360 square foot garage floor at about $1,400 to $3,200, and polyurethane foam lifting at about $2,900 to $9,000. We tell you if your slab needs leveling and can coordinate the repair order so the floor is lifted before we coat it.
Repair before coating
A coating shows every flaw underneath. Cracks telegraph through, chips leave dents, and raised joints show as ridges. That is why repair is part of every coating quote we write. You see each repair as a line item, so you know what you are paying for.

How It Works
1. Inspect
We look at each crack, joint and low spot and note which are moving.
2. Recommend
You get a written plan that separates cosmetic repairs from anything that needs a structural look.
3. Repair
Cracks are cleaned and filled, joints treated and spalls patched.
4. Finish
Repairs are ground flush, and the floor is resurfaced or coated if that is part of the job.

Concrete Crack & Floor Repair Questions
Why does my garage floor keep cracking?
In Lawton, the most common reason is soil movement. Clay under the slab swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which lifts and drops the concrete. Shrinkage as the concrete cured and loads from vehicles also play a part.
Can a cracked floor still be coated?
Usually, yes. Static cracks are filled and ground flush first. Moving cracks get a flexible treatment so the coating can move with them.
When is a crack a foundation problem?
Watch for cracks that keep widening, have one side higher than the other, or line up with cracks in the walls or doors that stick. Those can point to structural movement and should be checked before any floor work.
How much does it cost to repair cracks in a concrete floor?
This Old House lists patching small cracks and chips at about $25 to $250. Wider or moving cracks, sunken sections and resurfacing cost more, and we itemize each one in your quote.
